Bimini Island, Bahamas **UPDATE**
I’m updating this blog to report sea glass on Bimini Island! We were there in May of 2022, when there was no sea glass, but lots of stunningly beautiful sea shells! We just got back from another trip (Jan 2023) and there was SO much sea glass! It’s all greens, browns, and whites, but some pieces were really nice and thick and rounded. All very frosty. So it must depend on the winds and the currents. Plus we had some hurricanes blow through last fall. I even found some bonfire glass.
We took a taxi from the cruise pier for $5 per person past Alice Town to Radio Beach. We were the first ones there which helped. Then we walked towards the very tip of the island to where the channel is. We found sea glass the whole way. Paradise Island, Bahamas (original post)
We just got back from a cruise to the Bahamas on Norwegian Cruise Lines. It was really interesting seeing where the sea glass was, and wasn’t. We took a taxi to Paradise Island in Nassau and found pure pristine white sand. Now, if you’re a seasoned sea glass hunter, you’ll know that if there are no rocks, there is generally no sea glass. But if you looked closely, you could find the most beautiful shells that were bright pink and yellow. I’ve never seen shells like that before. But sadly, there was no sea glass at that beach.
Finding Sea Glass in Nassau Bahamas
Later on in the cruise, our ship couldn’t tender at their private island, so we went back to Nassau. This time, we walked off the ship and along the shore to Junkanoo Beach, which wasn’t nearly as nice as Paradise Island, and had construction nearby and smelled bad (what a beautiful mental picture I’m painting), but there were rocks AND SEA GLASS! It was everywhere. Most of it was junky beer bottle glass, but every now and then I found some beautiful, old, frosty pieces! I found two pieces of black glass too.
So even though I wouldn’t necessarily want to spend my vacation in Nassau, it was the perfect place for sea glass hunting.
Sea Glass In Grand Cayman
The cruise ship also stopped in Grand Cayman, but the weather was too windy to get to their normal spot near town, so we anchored on the south side of the island and tendered into a deserted area on shore near Shamrock Road. We went to an out-of-the-way local beach attached to Spotts Cemetery that was small and found so much sea glass! If you happen to get to that same dock, you turn right on Shamrock road and walk just under a mile. You can’t miss it on the right hand side. It also had a decent, small reef right off the beach that we snorkeled at. The kids saw a sea turtle and some beautiful fish. If you’re used to reef diving, you might be disappointed, but for the kids it was perfect. It was mostly craft quality sea glass, but it was still fun to find. Some pieces were rather rounded and frosty, so it wasn’t a total loss. There were plenty of pebbles and rocks nearby, so always look for those when trying to find sea glass.
So the take away is: look in unexpected places in the Bahamas for sea glass where there are pebbly beaches. Don’t just go to the main, popular beaches where there is just sand and expect to find treasures.
